Introducing our new Saturday Line Up!

Starting May 12, Calef Memorial Library is the place to be Saturday morning:

10-11am: Tech Talks, informal sessions that will help get you more tech savvy than ever before.  On May 12 we’ll be showing you how to get free library ebooks and audiobooks downloaded onto your Kindle, Nook, iPhone, mp3 player, or whatever else you’ve got.  Bring mobile devices (and their cables) and questions!  Check the Google Calendar for more information on upcoming sessions.

11am: Story Time for kids ages 2-6 (though everyone is allowed – even parents).

Story Time is weekly, while Tech Talks will normally be every 1st and 3rd Saturday.  (The start date for both was postponed until May 12 so that everyone can still participate in Green Up.  Sorry we didn’t get that update into the town report!)

Thank you!

A BIG thank you to local plumber Clifton Long, who donated and installed a new handicap-accessible sink and toilet at the library!  He also gave us hot water, something we’ve been sorely missing for nearly a year.  Thank you, Clifton!

Would you like to donate time, energy, or resources to help make your library and town a better place?  We still need to repaint our front door and railings, and are also looking for volunteers to help with summer reading programs, book processing, and more.  Stop by or email us at washington@vals.state.vt.us for more information!

New printer and computer!

New printer and computer!

We have a brand new PUBLIC printer/scanner/copier, courtesy of Dell Digital Wish. To celebrate, we rearranged some furniture and were able to fit a fourth public access computer in, as well as provide a little bit more elbow room for our computer users!

Remember, printouts, copies, and faxes are all available at your library and cost just 15 cents a page (to help cover supply costs).

Valentine’s Day Party!

Image

On Monday, Feb. 13, from 3-5pm, Calef Library will be hosting a Valentine’s Day Party for all ages.  We’ll have cookies to decorate, the romantic (and funny) movie Enchanted playing in the basement, and crafts set out so that you can bring home a handmade Valentine to that special someone.  Plus, poetry and love songs to set the mood and fun trivia about the wacky origins of this holiday.

Don’t feel like celebrating Valentine’s Day? Loathe the pink Hallmark holiday? Dress in black, bring your favorite anti-love poem to share, and have some cookies anyway.  All are welcome!

Snow Days of Long Ago

If all this freezing rain has you down, here are some pictures of Washington winters past to brighten your day, pulled from the Calef Memorial Library Archives:

Long before we had plows or snow machines, these snow rollers would be dragged through the streets to compact the fresh snow (rather than remove it), making it easier for horses and sleds to slide along through Washington’s still snowy streets.

Universal Class Instructions

Some people have been asking about the new Universal Class resource.  Using it is easy – all you need is your patron id number.

1) Go to http://vermontstate.universalclass.com/barcode-login.htm?enter+code

2) In the “Enter Code” box, copy and paste 2V6SG000000000.  Replace the last two to four zeros with your patron ID number (depending on how long your ID number is).

3) Click go, choose a user name and password, and complete registration.  You’re all set!

If you’re also interested in the Listen Up! Vermont service for free ebooks and audiobooks, know that when you’re prompted for a patron barcode there, you ONLY enter your two to four digit patron ID number, not the giant 14 digit one for Universal Class.

Happy learning!
